Ignacio Briones Rojas is a Chilean economist, academic, and politician, currently a professor at the Adolfo Ibáñez University (UAI), where he is part of the faculty of the School of Government. He also serves as a Senior Fellow at the same institution. He is best known for his role as Minister of Finance during the second administration of Sebastián Piñera, a position he held from October 2019 to January 2021.
Briones completed his secondary education at the Lycée Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in Santiago. He then studied Business and Economics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC), where he also earned two master’s degrees: one in Financial Economics and another in Political Science. In 2004, he completed a PhD in Political Economy at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po).
Before joining the ministerial cabinet, Briones served as Dean of the School of Government at the Adolfo Ibáñez University beginning in 2014 and was a member of the board of directors at Codelco. He also represented Chile as ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from 2013 to 2014.
